The endothelium: New insights into the origins and treatment of CAD
August 31, 2000

IV: Hypertension: A new treatment approach

  • Two trials of fixed combinations of quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) were undertaken in patients with hypertension to assess the efficacy of these combination therapies in reducing blood pressure.56

  • Patients enrolled in both studies were men and women aged over 18 years with supine diastolic BP of 100 mm Hg or greater but no higher than 120 mm Hg.

  • Both studies lasted for 12 weeks. Patients who met the selection criteria received quinapril 10 mg/HCTZ 12.5 or quinapril 20 mg/HCTZ 12.5 mg once daily for 12 weeks.

  • However, at week 6, if diastolic BP was not reduced by at least 10 mm Hg, the dose was increased to two tablets for weeks 7 through 12.

  • The results are presented on the next two slides.
