Targeting Insulin Resistance for Vascular Protection
July 31, 2006

I: Targeting Insulin Resistance for Vascular Protection

  • Recent data indicate that heart disease risk begins at blood glucose levels considered to be normal (<96 mg/dL).

  • Brunner et al examined the relationship between 2-hour postload glucose levels and coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality over 33 years in 17,869 men, aged 40-64 years.

  • Beginning at 83 mg/dL, rising glucose levels correlated linearly with CHD mortality (vertical bars indicate standard error).

  • The data are consistent with recent meta-analyses showing a correlation between CV risk and glucose levels below the diabetic threshold, thus driving evidence that CV risk in diabetes occurs within normal range.1
