COURAGE: Lifestyle intervention and risk factor goals
- Clinical coordinators performed comprehensive risk factor assessment and developed individualized lifestyle interventions.
- Lifestyle intervention goals included smoking cessation, at least 30 minutes of moderately intensive exercise 5 days a week, restriction of dietary fats, and weight control.
- The centerpiece of medical therapy was aggressive low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering with a target of 60 to 85 mg/dL. Secondary goals for lipid modulation included achieving high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels of 40 mg/dL or greater and triglyceride levels of <150 mg/dL.
- The goal of antihypertensive therapy was to achieve and maintain a target blood pressure of 130/85 mm Hg (<130/80 mm Hg in patients with diabetes).
- The diabetes management goal was an A1C level of <7%.
