Increased RAAS activity in diabetic nephropathy
- Activation of the renal RAAS also occurs in diabetes. Mezzano et al conducted a histochemical analysis of kidney biopsies from 10 patients with diabetes and overt nephropathy and 5 nondiabetic controls (normal) undergoing surgery for localized renal tumors.1
- As shown, ACE and Ang II were weakly expressed in the brush border of proximal tubules in the control group. In contrast, samples from diabetic subjects showed marked upregulation and more widespread distribution.
