Targeting Insulin Resistance for Vascular Protection
July 31, 2006

I: Targeting Insulin Resistance for Vascular Protection

  • C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic low-grade inflammation, has been shown to predict CV events in subjects without CV disease.

  • CRP significantly correlated with measures of adiposity, including visceral fat area, waist circumference, BMI, and fat mass, in 159 healthy men exhibiting a wide range of adiposity (lean to obese).

  • Visceral obesity was directly related to elevated CRP levels; patients with high levels of both total and visceral fat had the highest CRP levels.
